It serves as a reminder his sacrifice, according to Northern York County Regional Police Chief Mark Bentzel.

On Friday, fellow officers and members of the community were once again reminded of the ultimate sacrifice of local police officers during a memorial service.

Remembering: Officers and members of the community throughout the county packed into a conference room at the York County Department of Emergency Services for the ceremony.

York Area Regional Police Cpl. Keith Dwike spoke, leading prayers and giving closing remarks. He said he was happy to see so many people in attendance.

“It means a lot,” he said. “Public support is something we look forward to these days.”

York County Commissioner Chris Reilly also spoke during the ceremony. Reilly, the son of a 20-year veteran of the metropolitan police force in Washington, D.C., who passed away in January, knows the level of risk associated with being a police officer.

"I can't fathom how folks would not appreciate what police officers do," he said.

Bentzel and his department had roughly 10 officers in attendance. He said the people who come to the event are mostly dispatchers and fellow officers.

"I think this group as a whole understands what each of us goes through in our jobs," he said.

Patrol officer Sheldon Hooper was the only member of the York City Police Department who attended the ceremony. It was his first time attending, and he called the experience humbling.

"It's good to be recognized," he said.

Honored: There were six officers honored during the ceremony.

• Wildlife conservation officer David Grove, died on Nov. 11, 2010.

• Northern York County Regional Police Officer David Tome, died on Oct. 21, 2008.

• Deputy Edward "Skip" Schroeder, died on Jan. 10, 2005.

• York City Police Officer Henry Schaad,  died on July 19, 1969.

• State Motor Police Private Dean Zigler, died on Oct. 11, 1942.

• Northern York County Regional Police Officer Curtis D. Sowers, died on May 29, 1929.

A memorial table was also set up for Ronald Heist, a retired York City Police Officer who was killed during an armed robbery on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in March while working for Schaad Detective Agency.
