Three accused in assault, robbery outside Manchester Twp. motel
Two Mechanicsburg residents have been charged in Sunday morning's assault and robbery of a man in the Motel 6 parking lot, and a teenager will be charged as a juvenile, according to police.
Mathew Lee Gorbea, 21, of 2 Reservoir Drive and Mercedes Cannaday, 18, of 500 Geneva Drive, were both being held in York County Prison Monday on $25,000 bail each, charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, theft, receiving stolen property and simple assault. Gorbea also is charged with false identification to law enforcement.
A 16-year-old Mechanicsburg boy was detained after the robbery and released to Cumberland County juvenile probation officials, according to police, who said the teen will be charged as a juvenile with robbery and related offenses.
Northern York County Regional Police were called to the Motel 6 parking lot at 323 Arsenal Road in Manchester Township just before 11 a.m. Sunday, where 20-year-old Hamzi Ali of Mechanicsburg told them he'd been assaulted and robbed by three acquaintances, according to charging documents.
Ali told officers he, Gorbea, Cannaday and the teen stayed in a room there overnight and the next morning got into the Volkswagen Jetta that Cannaday was driving, documents state.
Punched, choked: After Ali got into the back seat, the teen started punching him in the head and face while Gorbea reached back from the front seat and choked Ali, police allege.
The teen then pulled about $600 from Ali's pocket and gave it to Gorbea, charging documents allege. Ali got out of the VW and Cannaday drove off, police said; Ali was robbed of his cellphone as well.
Ali's injuries included a swollen lip, a cut nose and marks on the side of his head and neck, according to documents.
Northern Regional Officer Erika Eiker was monitoring Interstate 83 near the Strinestown exit (Exit 28) for the VW and spotted it "swerving all over the left northbound lane and ... traveling at speeds close to 100 mph," documents state.
Eiker pulled over the VW, after which she and other officers, including from Newberry Township Police, patted down and detained the trio inside, according to documents.
'Gun,' cash found: Police searched the car after obtaining a search warrant and found what appeared to be a handgun in the trunk of the car, and also recovered cash. Northern Regional Lt. David Lash said the "handgun" was really just a BB gun that looked like a real gun.
Of the $1,793 found in the VW, Ali told police about $600 of it was his stolen cash and the rest belonged to Gorbea, documents state.
Lash said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (717) 292-3647, or leave a tip online at nycrpd.org.
