Jewish Family Services is hosting its 15th annual Walkathon to Fight Hunger on Sunday to benefit Project Manna and the Northeast Neighborhood Food Bank.

The walk will start at 9:45 a.m. at Indian Rock Elementary School, 1500 Indian Rock Dam Road. The group of walkers will go along the Rail Trail and should plan to return to the elementary school around 11:30 a.m. for refreshments and other activities.

“Twelve percent of York County residents live with food insecurity, and 18 percent of those are children," Carol Miller, JFS program and development director, said in a news release. "We are called to respond to this growing need in our own backyards."

JFS's Project Manna provides extra food to families who are economically stressed. It also gives counseling on how to access benefits and information about local food resources. The Northeast Neighborhood Food Bank provides food, clothing and support for people in similar situations around York County.

Not everyone has to walk, either, according to the JFS website. Those who aren't able to join the Rail Trail walk on Sunday can choose to join the "walkless walkathon." People can donate money that will go toward helping families get supplies and food to last a month.

According to the JFS website, $20 can prove paper towels, laundry detergent and dish soap for two families for a month. A $40 donation can provide peanut butter and jelly to seven families for a month. A $55 donation can provide cereal, rice and canned tuna, vegetables and fruit to nine families for that month.

For $75, pasta, sauce, two cans of soup and baked beans can be provided for 12 families in the area. For $100, all the above items can be provided to five families for a month.

Donations can be made online at walk.jfsyork.org. For more information on the walk, visit the JFS of York website.
