Crash shuts Route 15 near Dillsburg for nearly seven hours
Route 15 in the Dillsburg area was closed for nearly seven hours Monday after a four-vehicle, chain-reaction crash shut down the highway around lunchtime.
The crash happened at 12:37 p.m., according to the York County 911 Center, which dispatched a medical helicopter, medics, ambulances, fire/rescue personnel and the York County Hazardous Materials Response Team to the scene.
Carroll Township Police Sgt. David Smith said the crash happened near the Sunoco and American Legion post after an RV pulling a Jeep caught fire on northbound Route 15 near Chalet Street, causing traffic to back up.
"A tractor-trailer failed to stop for stopped traffic and struck the rear of another tractor-trailer," he said, causing a chain-reaction crash that involved a total of three tractor-trailers and a passenger vehicle — apparently a pickup truck.
"The driver of the first tractor-trailer was severely injured and was flown to a local hospital," Smith said. The driver's injuries are believed to be life-threatening, he said.
Smith said he is still gathering information about the other drivers' injuries and whether there was a hazmat situation at the crash scene.
Route 15 reopened around 7:15 p.m.
Smith said the closure was to give officers time to investigate the crash.
"Because of the seriousness of the injuries and the vehicles involved, it (required ) an extensive investigation," Smith said.
Traffic was being rerouted onto side roads, the sergeant said, but there were still serious traffic delays as a result of the closure.
