A York County-owned bridge that connects Jackson Township to North Codorus Township will be replaced later this year.

County commissioners awarded the nearly $1.5 million job to replace the Martin Road bridge over the west branch of the Codorus Creek to Susquehanna Valley Construction Corp., of New Cumberland, during their weekly meeting Wednesday.

The funds for the project, which came in slightly over budget, will come from the county's liquid fuels fund, John Klinedinst, the county engineer, told commissioners.

The previously projected cost of the project was $1.3 million, Steve Malesker, an engineer with the York City-based firm C.S. Davidson, said after the meeting. He chalked up the increased cost to heavy workloads construction crews have taken on.

"Contractors are busy and PennDOT (the state Department of Transportation) is doing a lot of work," he said.

Commissioners held the meeting offsite at William Penn Senior High School, part of an initiative to hold meetings across the county.

The project: Crews are expected to start work on the bridge around June and the project is expected to last until December, Malesker said.

The bridge, which was built in 1959, had been deemed structurally deficient.

Liquid fuels funding, used to maintain and improve locally owned roads and bridges, is funded through the state's gas tax.

The state recently announced increases in liquid fuel allocations to municipalities, the result of the 2013 transportation spending plan, Act 89, signed by former Gov. Tom Corbett.

Motorist fees and the state's gas tax increased to provide for added funding. Fees for driver's licenses and vehicle registration increased, with the current annual vehicle registration replaced with two-year registration and license renewal now every six years instead of four; and the cap on the state's gas tax was lifted.
