Spring cleanup set to go Saturday

The Keep York Beautiful Spring Cleanup event originally scheduled for last Saturday is set to go a week later.

The litter-cleaning event, which is open to anyone, will run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. around York City, according to a news release from the city.

Anyone interested can pick up equipment such as bags and gloves from the parking lot of York City Hall at 101 S. George St. starting at 7:30 a.m. that day. The equipment has to be returned to the lot by 11 a.m.

The event was scheduled for last Saturday at the same time, but was canceled because the day was cold and snowy.

In past years, at least 130 people have shown up to clean up the city, said Tom Smith, the executive director of Keep York Beautiful. He estimates the city collected almost a ton of trash during the 2015 cleanup.

The city notes that this event is focused on litter cleanup only — this isn't for big items such as furniture.

Anyone looking to get furniture, appliances or anything else of that scale picked up should call 843-1240 to make an appointment to have them picked up.
