Alleged Walmart shooter arraigned at hospital
The York Township man police say robbed the Shrewsbury Walmart on Thursday night with a sawed-off shotgun which he then shot at a state trooper was denied bail Tuesday morning.
Thomas Allen Markowski, 57, of 2716 Crestview Drive, was arraigned at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a law-enforcement officer, aggravated assault, robbery, reckless endangerment, theft and weapons offenses.
Markowski was shot once in the chest by the state trooper who he allegedly fired upon and has remained in York Hospital since. Senior magisterial district judge Nancy Edie came to his bedside at the hospital Tuesday morning to arraign him, according to the Shrewsbury-area district judge office she presides over.
Edie denied him bail, citing concerns for public safety, according to her office.
A pharmacy technician told police that around 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Markowski approached the pharmacy counter in a motorized wheelchair and threatened to shoot the technician if she didn't give him fentanyl, a strong opiate. She handed it over, and Markowski was leaving the store when he was confronted by an arriving trooper from the York barracks, according to documents; a "brief struggle" ensued, documents state.
Markowski pointed a sawed-off Mossberg 500A 12-gauge shotgun at the trooper and fired, according to documents. But the trooper was able to push the barrel aside, police say.
The shotgun blast struck an interior wall near the main entrance, where numerous customers were located, according to documents.
The trooper returned fire, hitting Markowski in the chest, at which point the trooper disarmed Markowski, documents state.
A state police trooper based in Carlisle is investigating the robbery and shooting, and he has filed charging documents against the man. State police spokesman Trooper Rob Hicks said that's standard procedure to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.
York Hospital had no information about Markowski on Wednesday afternoon.
