Cops: Man hires Uber car, crashes it after driver takes nap
COLESVILLE, N.Y. — Authorities say a New York City man crashed a car while trying to elude police after taking the wheel so the Uber driver he hired could take a nap.
State Police say 20-year-old Juan Carlos of the Bronx hired the car last weekend in Philadelphia to take him 200 miles to a college in central New York.
After the driver asked Carlos to take the wheel while he took a nap, a trooper clocked Carlos going 86 mph in a 65-mph zone early Saturday on Interstate 81 near Binghamton.
When the driver woke up and asked why he was driving so fast, Carlos told him it was because the police were chasing them.
Carlos crashed soon afterward. The men suffered minor injuries.
Carlos was charged with fleeing a police officer and driving without a license. It couldn’t be determined if he has a lawyer.
