Police: N.J. man forced woman into prostitution

Police say a prostitution sting on Friday led them to arrest a New Jersey man forcing a woman to have sex with others in order to pay off her bail.

Barry Schiff, 49, of Blackwood, New Jersey, is charged with two counts of trafficking of individuals and one count each of promoting prostitution and involuntary servitude, according to documents.

On Friday afternoon, Northern York County Regional Police were investigating an ad on a website that suggested prostitution. Police say an undercover officer arranged a meeting with the woman who was advertised on the site. Officers were told it would be $300 per hour and they would meet for two hours.

The woman and the officer met at a Motel 6, and when the woman entered, she immediately told the undercover officer she was being held against her will by Schiff, documents state. Schiff was outside the motel in a Lexus, according to police. The woman and Schiff were arrested and officers spoke to the two of them.

The woman told officers she had known Schiff since May 2015, when they had been neighbors at a hotel, documents state. She said she had since moved out and until recently had not seen him since December.

On March 10, the woman was arrested in Salem County, New Jersey, and three days later Schiff bailed her out, police said. She said Schiff had taken her back to his home, where he was staying with a man named Kenny. Schiff told the woman she owed him $1,400 for bail, plus interest, and she would need to work it off, according to documents.

She said she was forced to have sex with men at the residence because each time she refused, Schiff would get angry with her and throw things, threatening to put her back in jail or have her killed, documents state. The woman knew some of Schiff's friends and felt genuinely threatened, police said.

Northern York County Regional Police say when they spoke with the woman she seemed scared and thought she would be hurt for "snitching."

On Thursday, Schiff took the woman to Lancaster, where she was forced to have sex with a man and a woman against her will, police said.

When police spoke with Schiff, he said Kenny, the man Schiff was staying with, was in charge of the operation, normally controlling up to seven girls, documents state. Schiff told police he only receives between 10 percent and 25 percent of what the girls make and that he usually makes runs from New Jersey to Philadelphia with the girls working for Kenny, police said.

Schiff remains in York County prison after being unable to post $100,000 bail.
