Healthy aging workshops offered at Penn State York
Staying healthy as you age is vital for a long life, and the York County Area Agency on Aging wants to make sure York County senior citizens have the necessary education.
The agency is hosting workshops from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays March 18 through April 15. The workshops will take place at the Penn State University York Campus Conference Center main classroom building, 1031 Edgecomb Ave.
“This program centers on health promotion and disease prevention in the older adult,” said Diane Gerhart, administrative officer with the Agency on Aging. “It is an evidence-based program that was designed by the Center for Aging and Population Health at the University of Pittsburgh through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) research centers.”
The workshops will discuss regular immunizations, cancer screenings, combating depression and regulating blood glucose, as well as other healthy habits. Each workshop will cover the same things.
“Participants receive a comprehensive current workbook that has handouts on each topic, additional information — including links and York community resources — and tips on how registrants can share this information with others,” Gerhart said.
There are also materials that outline preventative services covered by Medicare, she said.
“More importantly, I feel, is the personal goal and action step worksheets that help the attendee commit to a specific plan of action which includes physician follow-up where indicated,” Gerhart said. “There are many activities included that help the participant relate this to everyday life and take action.”
Preregistration for the free workshops is required by Wednesday. To register for the workshops, call 717-852-4902 ext. 339.
