Downtown Inc has named deputy director Tim Miller as the organization's acting director as the board hunts for someone new to take the helm permanently.

Miller, 37, a Shrewsbury native, has been with Downtown Inc for about 2½ years, working first as a program coordinator before moving up to deputy director.

He temporarily replaces Sonia Huntzinger, the organization's executive director who announced her departure earlier this month.

Downtown Inc is a wing of the city government, an authority whose board members are appointed by the mayor, but then aims to remain largely apolitical. It focuses on a 26-block area around the city's downtown, attempting to revitalize the area. It has a budget just over half a million dollars.

Miller said the search process for a permanent replacement likely will take until the late summer or early fall, so he'll remain in charge until then.

He said a big part of his job as deputy director has been building relationships between organization and the community.

"We have to get everybody on board," he said.

The organization relies in part on "local stakeholders," such as businesses, individuals and other organizations, to help fund efforts, he said. Miller said they have had plenty of support on their recent projects, such as improvements to the Rail Trial running through the city, a million-dollar project York College helped fund.

He said Downtown Inc. plans on giving itself a hard look over the next few months, making sure its organizational structure is as efficient as possible, and updating its aims for the downtown area. Right now, the organization has five main points of focus: economic development, safety, beautification, events and promotions.

"The question is, how are those focuses balanced, and are there new focuses to entertain," he said the organization would consider.
