Police: Dallastown man held girlfriend against her will
A Dallastown man who refused to let his girlfriend leave her apartment assaulted the woman, at times brandishing a knife he eventually used to cut himself, police allege.
Edward Charles Fonseca told the woman he would blame her for his knife injuries so she would lose her job, according to charging documents filed by York Area Regional Police.
Fonseca, 41, of 422 Tanglewood Lane, remains in York County Prison, charged with unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, attempted simple assault, defiant trespass and harassment. He was arraigned Tuesday by District Judge Scott Laird, who set bail at $10,000, court records state.
Fonseca also is being held without bail on a York County probation-violation detainer, meaning authorities allege he violated probation conditions.
Police said they were called to the woman's West Maple Street neighborhood in Dallastown about 4:15 p.m. Feb. 9, where they found her inside a neighbor's home, crying and barefoot despite the fact that there was fresh snow on the ground.
She told them that when she got home from work about 2:30 p.m., Fonseca was in her home, intoxicated, and refused to leave when she told him to, according to charging documents.
The allegations: Fonseca pushed the woman, causing her head to hit the range hood in her kitchen, documents state.
He took her cellphone and car keys and wouldn't even allow her to use her bathroom, instead telling her to urinate on the floor, according to documents. Police said Fonseca eventually relented and allowed her to use the bathroom, but stood by to prevent her from escaping.
The woman told police she tried to flee her home nearly 20 times, but Fonseca thwarted all her efforts, documents state.
When the woman yelled for help, Fonseca covered her face and mouth with his hands until she couldn't breathe, at which point she bit his fingers, according to documents.
Fonseca then grabbed a kitchen knife and stood over her with it, forcing her to agree she "was a lousy person," police said.
Cut himself: He slashed his own arm several times and bled on the woman's floor, tables, chairs and sinks while telling her he would convince police that she injured him, charging documents allege.
The woman wound up crawling under her kitchen table and begging him to leave, police said.
When Fonseca's cellphone rang and he went to another room to retrieve it, the barefoot woman bolted out her front door and called 911 from a neighbor's home, documents state.
Fonseca was gone when officers arrived, but they found him in his own home, intoxicated and crying, according to documents, which state he was committed to York Hospital's psychiatric ward.
It is unclear whether Fonseca has retained an attorney.
