A York City man was drunk when he led police on a short vehicle chase over the weekend after crashing into a vehicle, charging documents state.

Jahmeare M. McCowin, 25, of 250 S. Penn St., remained in York County Prison Monday afternoon on $5,000 bail, charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, accidents involving damage to an attended vehicle or property, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license.

York City Police Officer Ben Praster was dispatched to the corner of South Queen and East Philadelphia streets for a reported hit-and-run crash about 12:15 a.m. Saturday and started to chase the vehicle involved, a 1992 Chevrolet sedan driven by McCowin, according to charging documents.

McCowin drove east on Poplar Street and turned south on Pine Street when Praster activated his cruiser's lights and siren, documents state.

The car was sitting at the intersection of Princess and Pine streets and took off at a high rate of speed when McCowin saw the police cruiser approaching, according to documents.

McCowin tried to turn north onto Lancer Alley, but instead crashed into a building, documents state.

At that point McCowin jumped out of the car and ran westbound on East Princess Street, but was quickly captured, according to police.

Charging documents don't mention any injuries from the hit-and-run crash that started the chase, and also provide no other information about it.
