Get creative with cans during Canstruction

Building enthusiasts, artists and people with amazing stacking skills are able to register until March 4 for the Project SHARE Central Pennsylvania Canstruction competition.

Groups of artists and builders create sculptures during Canstruction Central Pa. The cans of food are donated to local food pantries and banks.

Competition starts April 22 at the Capital City Mall, Camp Hill. Sculptures will be on display from April 22 to April 29.

“Canstruction is a fun way to educate our neighbors about the serious need of food assistance in our community,” said Elain Livas, Project SHARE founder and executive director. “We’re continuously surprised by all the imagination and cannot wait to see what people create this year. When our community comes together, great things happen.”

About 15 percent of households in Central Pennsylvania need food assistance, according to a Feb. 15 press release from Project SHARE. This includes more than one in five households with children and more than 160,000 Central Pennsylvanians accessing hunger relief programs.

The building competition benefits local food pantries and banks in Central Pennsylvania. Giant is providing all the cans used for Canstruction.

The competition deadline is March 4, and it requires a $150 donation per team. Sponsors for the event are also needed. The deadline to register as a sponsor is March 30.

Registration is open to professionals in the designing and building industry, students and volunteers from York, Lancaster, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin and Adams counties.
