Police: Man shot in foot in York City

Police say one man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot in the foot Sunday in York City.

Shortly after receiving calls for shots fired around 11:30 a.m. for the area around the intersection of West Princess and South Penn streets, authorities found a shooting victim in the 400 block of Salem Avenue, a few blocks away, according to York City Police officers on the scene.

Another man shot him near that intersection then fled east, police at the scene said. They said the victim headed the other way, west on Princess before cutting up an alley and ending up on Salem.

Where the alley ends on Princess is an easy stone's throw from the corner of West Princess and South Penn streets, where a small crowd remained just before noon, watching police wrap up their investigation.

Jovanny Oliveras lives in the 200 block of South Penn Street, more or less right across the road from where the shooting happened.  He estimated he heard three or four gunshots.

"I was asleep and woke up to, like, 'Pow, pow, pow,'" he said.

Half a block north, Charlie and Sarah Smith stood out on their front porch. They'd heard the gunshots, counting about five, and it seemed to them like the shots had come from more toward Salem Avenue, or in the alleyway, Charlie Smith said.

The pair could quickly think of several other incidents of violence offhand. One neighbor was shot in the backside at one point, another was found dead by the side of the road, they said. They recalled the woman who police said at the time was struck by a bullet meant for someone else about six months ago as she sat out on that same 400 block of Salem Avenue.

"Sometimes I'm laying here in the living room and I worry something's going to come through the window," Sarah Smith said.

Blood remains on Salem Avenue about 20 minutes after someone was shot in the foot nearby Sunday.
