Northern York County School District on Monday announced it is looking to sell the 102-year-old building that currently houses its administration offices.

The building, which is located on 149 S. Baltimore St. in Dillsburg, was built in 1914 as a comprehensive K-12 school. Starting in 1953, it housed the district's elementary school students until its role shifted into the district's administrative building in 1982. In spite of the changes, the three-story building has retained many of its original features.

"Dillsburg has a farmer's fair every year, and people will stop by to see the classroom they were in," said Superintendent Eric Eshbach. "Two rooms upstairs are pretty much untouched, with chalkboards and the same walls."

RSR, Realtors has listed the 14,802-square-foot building, which has been retro-fitted for office use, for $495,000. The district has chosen to sell the building and relocate its administrative offices to renovated space in a former school as a "cost-saving move," Eshbach said.

In spite of its age, the brick building is structurally sound, he said, and he also emphasized its historic value.

"It's a beautiful building from the outside," he said. "It's got a nice peaked roof. Inside, it needs some attention, but the right person who has a love for this kind of structure could make it into a gorgeous facility."

Under current zoning codes, the building may be used for any number of purposes, including multi-family housing, office space, retail, child care, bed and breakfast, medical clinic or a hotel or a motel, said listing agent Niko Corado. The building currently has 18 parking spots, but the amount could be expanded by razing an annex currently on the site.

"Dillsburg has a rural, small-town feel, but it's vibrant and easy to reach," said Corado. "A developer with fresh ideas can use this building to get engaged in downtown revitalization and the growing interest in the borough's rich history."
