Coroner identifies man allegedly killed by group after trespassing in York City

York County urges dog license renewal

Greg Gross

'Tis the season... for York Countians to renew their dogs licenses.

Licenses range in price from $8.50 for an annual license or $51.50 for a lifetime one. The cost drops to $6.50 yearly, or $31.50 for a lifetime license, for a dog that is spayed or neutered and discounts are offered to older pet owners or those with a disability. In order to qualify for a lifetime license, a dog must be micro-chipped or tattooed.

Dog owners must have their pooches licensed by Jan. 1 of each year or face a hefty fine.

"Obtaining the license is not only the smart thing to do, it also saves you money," said York County Treasurer Barb Bair, whose office oversees licensing in the county.

A dog owner can be fined up to $300 for each unlicensed dog, she noted. State law requires that all dogs 3-months-old or older be licensed

Not spam: For the second year the treasurer's office has turned to email as a way of contacting owners whose email addresses are on file with the  office.

But the 9,000 emailed notices may have been met with confusion. Since the emails came from the address, some owners may have thought the notices are spam.

The emails are the real deal, Bair said, adding all others dog owners were contacted through regular mail.

Licenses can be purchased online, by mail or at the treasurer's office, 28 E. Market St. in York City. They can also be purchased at 17 locations throughout the county.

Replacement lifetime license tags can also be obtained at the office. For owners who have moved or have new contact information, they should contact the treasurer's office with their new information.
