York City Police: 'Serial rapist' assaulted kids

Sean Philip Cotter

Police didn't pull punches when describing the York City man they they suspect may have assaulted at least five different children — one 3 years old at the time — over the past few years.

Terrell Debarge Gable

"Would I classify him as a serial rapist?" said York City Police Lt. Troy Bankert, supervisor of the department's detective bureau, before answering his own question.

"Yes, I would."

The man Bankert was talking about, Terrell Debarge Gable, 30, of 348 E. King St., is currently behind bars, facing three sets of sexual-assault-related charges and under investigation for at least two more, the lieutenant said.

The first of the sexual assaults happened sometime in 2011 or early 2012, according to charging documents. Police believe it occured in that range because his first victim told authorities in October 2015 that Gable had raped her when she was 8 or 9 years old, which covers that time period, documents state.

Police say Gable broke into an East Salem Avenue residence in which a girl was sleeping on the couch as her parents slept upstairs.

She told authorities Gable pulled the covers and her pants and underwear off, and anally raped her, injuring her, according to documents.

Police say the girl told them she shouted for her mother, but no one could hear her, and Gable told her to "shut up."

After Gable finished raping her, police say, he smoked a cigarette before leaving.

In connection with that incident, Gable is charged with the class-one felonies of child rape and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of a child resulting in serious bodily injury, as well as sexual assault, indecent assault and other related felony and misdemeanor counts.

More assaults: Two other young children also told authorities Gable assaulted them, according to documents.

On May 27, 2015, a 4-year-old girl told authorities her "daddy's friend" had touched her private parts the previous day, according to charging documents. She said her father had been asleep at the time.

During a medical exam done at York Hospital the day of the assault, a nurse found tearing and an abrasion to her vaginal area, documents state.

On Oct. 13, 2015 — the day before police filed the child-rape charges —  Detective Kyle Hower of the York City Police Department interviewed Gable, who admitted to knowing the girl, sleeping over once and owning a red sweatshirt she described to authorities, according to documents. Nine days later, police filed charges of aggravated indecent assault of a child, which is a class-one felony, and other felony and misdemeanor counts relating to the May incident.

Then, earlier this month, a 4 ½-year-old girl reported Gable had assaulted her several times in May 2013, when she was 3, documents state. Police say another person witnessed him "humping" a chair the girl sat in.

For that alleged assault, Gable is charged with indecent sexual assault of a person younger than 13 and corruption of minors — both class-three felonies.

Bankert could not provide information about the other assaults police suspect Gable committed, as the investigations are ongoing.

Gable remains in York County Prison on $150,100 bail — $75,000 for each of two of the sets of sexual-assault charges, plus $100 for an unrelated minor drug offense — and a parole detainer, according to prison records.

His attorney, Kathryn Bellfy, could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.
