Someone shot a man at least three times as he left a York City bar early Tuesday morning, but it's unclear why, police said.

William Barton, 34, of South Pine Street, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his legs, according to York City Police Lt. Troy Bankert, who supervises the detective bureau.

It happened about 1 a.m. as Barton was walking out of Degen's Restaurant at 743 E. Market St., Bankert said.

Despite the number of wounds he suffered, Barton escaped life-threatening injury, Bankert said.

Barton was taken to York Hospital in a private vehicle, according to the lieutenant.

His hospital condition could not be obtained Tuesday afternoon.

Bankert said detectives have not yet determined a motive, have no suspect and received "limited cooperation from witnesses and the victim."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call city police at (717) 846-1234.
