Republican state Sen. Pat Vance's three-decade career in the Legislature will come to an end in 2016.

The Cumberland County representative, whose Senate district includes parts of York County, announced Thursday that she will not seek re-election.

“My time as an elected official has been extremely rewarding,” Vance said in a statement. “Not only have I been given the opportunity to impact a community, for which I care deeply, but I’ve also been given the opportunity to work with a number of very bright and capable individuals who I now call friends."

Career: Vance, 79, got her start in state politics in 1990 when she was elected to the House of Representatives. Prior to that, she served as the Cumberland County recorder of deeds

While  in the House, she penned 18 laws that included expanding the state’s prescription drug benefits program, preventing insurance companies from discriminating against domestic violence victims and establishing a “bill of rights” for HMO health care customers, the release states.

When Vance was elected to the Senate 11 years ago, she championed bills aimed at combating drug abuse and limiting civil lawsuits.

GOP:  In a separate statement, Rob Gleason, the chairman of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania, praised Vance for her time in office.

“State Senator Pat Vance’s work has improved the lives of the people of central Pennsylvania,” Gleason said. “As a registered nurse, Pat Vance has brought a unique and important perspective to both the State Senate and State House. Pennsylvanians have access to safer and improved health care because of Pat Vance’s service."

In July, state Rep. Mike Regan, R-Dillsburg, announced he is seeking Vance's seat.

Regan has said he would not seek to retain his House seat.

In York County, Vance's district includes an area that stretches from Fairview Township in the north to Jackson Township in the south. Her district also includes portions of Cumberland County.
