Coroner: Reports show York City boy accidentally shot himself
Update: The York County Coroner's Office tweeted this afternoon that reports show 12-year-old Marlin Banks, Jr. accidentally shot himself while he was looking at a gun in his home.
An autopsy this morning showed that Marlin died of a gunshot wound to the head and that it happened accidentally.
Marlin was accidentally shot in his York City home early Sunday morning, York City Police Sgt. William Wentz said.
Marlin died shortly after being taken to York Hospital, according to the York County Coroner's Office.
Emergency personnel responded to a call to the Marlin's family's home in the 200 block of North Richland Avenue around 7:40 a.m., a York County 911 official said.
There, they found the wounded boy and a second injured person, a man Wentz said was related to the boy. The man had lacerations to his hand that he told police he'd gotten from punching the wall, Wentz said.
Shortly after police and emergency workers arrived on the scene, the man sat on the porch cradling his hand and crying inconsolably while family members and medical personnel tended to him, his white shirt spattered with blood.
A woman's cries were audible from inside the house; Marlin was carried on a stretcher to an ambulance, and police helped members of the victim's family to their car.
"It was accidental — that's how it was relayed to us," Wentz said. Police were not sure whether Marlin accidentally shot himself or died at the hand of another person, he said.
