Schreiber sponsor of events honoring African-American troops in Civil War
Rep. Kevin Schreiber, D-York City, promoted the Grand Review weekend and Parade In Harrisburg over the weekend.
The Grand Review weekend was a result of a resolution sponsored by Schreiber and others designating the week of Nov. 9 through Nov. 15 as U.S. Colored Troops Grand Review Week, which was adopted by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, according to a release.
The event was to mark the 150th anniversary of a parade held in Harrisburg for African-American Civil War veterans. Re-enactors from around the country participated in Saturday's parade.
Schrieber was emcee of the White Carnation Dinner honoring the descendants of African-American Civil War veterans.
He said over the past few years many Civil War veterans have been honored for their service, but African-American veterans did not receive as many honors.
"Unfortunately in many cases the African-American veterans were excluded from their honors," he said.
He said the parade and the dinner were good way to bookend the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
"I think it was a pretty novel way for Pennsylvania to close out," he said.
