White Rose owner and manager to open seafood restaurant at former Maewyn's Pub


The owner and general manager of White Rose Bar and Grill have purchased the former Maewyn's Irish Pub.

Tom Sibol, owner of White Rose for more than three decades, and Jeremiah Anderson, general manager since 2008, plan to turn the former two-story 110 N. George St. restaurant, which closed in July 2014, into a seafood restaurant, they said.

The duo hasn't settled on a name yet after just finalizing details of the purchase on Monday, but Anderson said the hop is to have the restaurant ready to open in early 2016.

Sibol said the decision to create a seafood restaurant, which will include an oyster bar, is because he felt people who want good seafood in York shouldn't have to drive all the way to Baltimore.

The 7,766 square-foot building, which was built in 1904, features stained glass, tin ceiling and hardwood floors, according to a Rock Commercial Real Estate marketing brochure. In the current plan, the first floor can seat about 150 and the second floor, which was used as a banquet facility, can seat about 125.

Anderson said they will be completely changing the way the inside looks.

The listing price for the building was $750,000. Sibol declined to answer how much they paid for it.

The restaurant is in the midst of numerous other York City drinking and dining options, including White Rose, which is just a short walk away. The new restaurant will sit right in between Left Bank and Tutoni's.

Sibol said the decision to purchase another restaurant so close to White Rose is demonstrative of his love for downtown York.

"I've been here since I was 10 years old, and now is the perfect time (to buy another restaurant) with all the energy and redevelopment," he said.

Anderson said downtown York presents many more opportunities for growth, and he hoped more restaurants and bars would continue opening in the area.

Sibol has seen the ups and downs of the city, as he's the third generation in his family to own White Rose. Sibol said this new restaurant will also be a family affair because he considers Anderson family.

Anderson, who maintains an ownership stake in White Rose, said it's exciting to be part of opening a restaurant from the ground floor, which he's done in several Harrisburg restaurants, including Mars Lounge and Stock's on 2nd.

The restaurant will likely employ 35-40 people once it opens, Sibol said.
