A shooting inside a York City bar sent a man to the hospital Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Police said James Murray was shot just after 2 p.m. during a struggle with a man who was trying to rob the owner of Norman's Place bar.

Murray was shot at least once in the chest. He was in stable condition at York Hospital Tuesday evening, police said.

Lt. Troy Bankert, who supervises York City Police's detective bureau, said officers didn't have anyone in custody yet.

Crime tape surrounded the bar shortly after 2:30 p.m., as a group of onlookers stood around watching and speculating.

Glenda Williams, who lives two doors down from the bar, didn't hear gunshots, though she said she did hear an argument a little while before.

She was at her neighbor's place right next to the bar when the shooting occurred, and they all came outside when they heard the sirens. She said they saw paramedics take a man, alive and conscious, out of the bar's front door on a stretcher.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 846-1234.
