The Southern York County School District is honoring a former superintendent, renaming its district administration building the Thomas R. Hensley District Administration Center.

Hensley served as the district's superintendent for 15 years before announcing his retirement and completing his contract in June 2014.

Hensley was instrumental in creating the district's mantra, "The Southern Way," reflecting a student-first mentality, said former colleague and the district's chief financial and operations officer, Wayne McCullough.

Hensley spent more than 40 years in education before his retirement.

"Hensley's leadership has resulted in outstanding student achievement and return on investment for our community," McCullough said.

The district's school board agreed to the name change in May. The cost of a new sign outside the building, including installation, was covered through donations, according to a district news release.
