Downtown York exhibit features Pa. first lady's artwork
Fine art and collaborative design for social good will rub elbows at an upcoming exhibit in the Pennsylvania Arts Experience gallery at Marketview Arts, 37 W. Philadelphia St., York City.
The exhibit, which begins on Friday and ends Dec. 1, will feature the work of Pennsylvania first lady Frances Donnelly Wolf and a display about the Buddy Bench at Lincoln Charter School.
Jessica Lee, executive director of the Pennsylvania Arts Experience, said Wolf works in oil on canvas and has traditionally used prose and poetry as inspiration.
Wolf paints "realistic objects in a surrealistic setting," Lee said.
Admission is free, and the gallery's regular hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
Buddy Bench: State Rep. Kevin Schreiber, D-York City, will speak at the opening of the exhibit, 5:30-9 p.m. Friday.
The goal of the Buddy Bench, which is being installed on the playground at Lincoln Charter School, is to promote friendship and inclusiveness and eliminate bullying.
"If it goes well, we can replicate it in schools throughout the city," he said.
Last year's fifth-graders, 125 students in all, participated in the design of the bench, said Anne Clark, the school's community outreach director.
They received lessons in architecture and engineering from the staff of architectural firm CORE Design and then came up with their own designs.
Teachers selected some of the best designs in their classes, and three different architects created designs that combined students' ideas. Students then voted to pick the best of the three, Clark said.
Students from York College have created a curriculum to go along with the bench.
Lydia Moro and Kelsy Diehl, York College students who are the team leaders for the Buddy Bench project, said the curriculum involves a series of core values, such as the idea of showing respect on the playground.
