Police: Brake pedal mix-up leaves hole in motel
An SUV driver inadvertently created a new entrance to a Fairview Township motel Tuesday night when she crashed into it, leaving a large hole in an exterior wall, according to police.
Yuri Liriano-Gomez, 23, of Harrisburg, intended to hit the brakes on her Isuzu Axiom, but hit the gas instead and crashed into the motel, Fairview Township Police Sgt. Davis Holland said.
It happened about 9:35 p.m. at the Scottish Inns, 300 Commerce Drive, he said.
"It basically took out the whole wall of the lobby area ... and some vending machines on the other side of the lobby," Fairview Township Fire Chief Chris Weidenhammer said. "There was glass everywhere."
Live wires: He said responding fire and rescue crews first had to deal with live electrical wires that had been exposed by the crash. They isolated the power to the building so no one got shocked and no fires sparked, he said.
Then they made sure the building was stable, which it is, Weidenhammer said.
The SUV was able to be driven away, according to Holland.
Liriano-Gomez and her two passengers — including an infant — escaped injury, Weidenhammer said.
At this point it appears she will be cited with summary traffic citations, Holland said.
A man answering the phone at Scottish Inns on Wednesday said the motel remains open for business.
Weidenhammer said he did not yet have a damage estimate.
