PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Zoo says one of its two polar bears has died.

The zoo announced on its Facebook page that Klondike, its 34-year-old female, was euthanized Friday morning due to a "recent and substantial decline in her medical condition." The zoo says Klondike had trouble standing and walking and did not respond to treatment.

Calling her the oldest polar bear in the United States, zoo officials says she brought joy to the staff and was an "important ambassador to wild polar bears." Klondike came to the zoo more than 30 years ago.

The zoo's remaining polar bear, Coldilocks, is also 34 years old and now becomes the nation's oldest polar bear.
