Democrat enters city schools race to oppose Libertarian
The previously uncontested race for the open seven seats on the York City School Board just got a little more interesting.
James Harris, a Democrat from York City, on Friday announced his intentions to run a write-in campaign for a seat on the board in the upcoming Nov. 3 election.
Five four-year seats and two two-year seats are up for grabs on the nine-member board, and the only names on the ballot are already sitting members.
Those seeking to fill the available four-year seats are incumbents Michael Breeland, Diane Glover Brown, Lois Garnett, Michael Miller, and James Sawor, all Democrats, and those campaigning for an additional two-year term include Juanita Kirkland, Democrat and Dave Moser, Libertarian.
Harris, who's director of the community center for The Salvation Army in York, will be seeking a two-year term. He is also a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, and intends to run his write-in campaign against Moser, according to a press release.
"We know full well which direction Moser wishes to take the school board," said Democratic Party of York County Chair Chad Baker in a press release. "If Moser is elected, he will continue to push for receivership of the district, something the current board, educators, parents and students alike fought so admirably against. We need a unified board to move the focus of the district forward and to provide optimal outcomes for the schools within the district and its students."
Harris is a lifelong resident of York County and a York City resident since 1982. His two children graduated from William Penn High School and he currently has two grandchildren enrolled in the district.
"In order for the York City School District to move forward and strengthen the opportunities for the students in the district, I felt it imperative to run as a write-in candidate," Harris said in a press release. "We need to be focused on the students and educators in the district and we need to provide them the necessary means by which to receive a strong education."
