Police: York City man stole $550-plus of surf and turf from Reading-area grocery store
Police in Berks County have a beef with a York City man who they say acted shellfishly, allegedly stealing more than $500 worth of surf and turf from a Giant grocery store.
Todd M. Leighty, 52, of 51 S. Lehman St., is charged with one misdemeanor count each of retail theft, conspiracy to commit retail theft and receiving stolen property. He allegedly acted with Luis Manuel Rivera, 30, of Reading, who is charged with the same crimes.
Spring Township Police say the pair targeted the Giant at 2641 Shillington Road, which is Route 724 in Berks County Leighty grabbed a shopping cart and then loaded it up with 28 items worth $574.37, and then walked right out the store's entrance without paying shortly before 2 p.m. Friday. He and Rivera, who had been waiting the parking lot, put all the items in the cart into bags they'd brought, according to charging documents.
Their alleged haul included six tenderloins, five lobster tails, three ribeyes, three packages of jumbo lump crab meat and a couple of strip steaks and sirloins, according to police. The crab, at $33.99 per package, was the most expensive item.
Employees noticed Leighty leaving and followed him out, asking him to come back in and pay, documents state. The two opted not to do that, and instead left, police say.
Officers responding to 911 calls from the store's managers eventually tracked down Leighty walking down Route 724. People in the area said they'd seen him take off his coat and throw it, but police opted not to go get it because it was up a tree, according to documents.
Leighty remains in Berks County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail, while Rivera remains free on $10,000 bail, according to online court records.

This isn't the first time York Countians have allegedly had a hankering for ill-gotten surf and turf; York Area Regional Police said a man stole more than $200 worth of steak, shrimp and cans of crab meat from the Giant at 3175 Cape Horn Road in Windsor Township about 4:20 p.m. on July 28.
That's after back-to-back days earlier that month which someone take more than $250 worth of shrimp from other Giant stores. One was from the establishment at 1255 Carlisle Road West Manchester Township, followed by at theft from the one at 2415 E. Market St. in Springettsbury Township.
Police at the time said the incidents were unrelated.
