Police: Convicted felon driving stolen car caused crash, badly injured woman

A convicted felon driving a stolen car fled the scene after causing a crash in York City that left a woman badly injured, police said.

Shabazz Adair Borders left behind a handgun, a Walmart shopping bag and a Doritos bag when he fled the scene of the crash, which happened about 12:05 a.m. Sept. 16, at the corner of West Philadelphia and Beaver streets, according to charging documents.

It was the Doritos bag that marred his plan to evade responsibility for the crash, documents state.

That's because investigators used a receipt from the Walmart bag for the Doritos purchase to determine it was Borders who purchased the snack about two hours before the crash, police allege.

Video from the Walmart shows Borders buying the Doritos, getting into a Chevrolet Malibu that had been reported stolen from McSherrystown and driving away, documents allege.

Witnesses told officers the Malibu was northbound on North Beaver Street at a high rate of speed when it ran the red light at West Philadelphia Street and crashed into Chevrolet Blazer being driven by Amanda Gambrell, documents state.

Thrown from truck: Gambrell was thrown from the truck in the crash, and officers found her lying facedown on the sidewalk about 15 feet from the truck, police said.

Gambrell, 31, suffered severe internal injuries and head trauma, according to police. She remains in serious condition in York Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.

Her sister, Brenda Glatfelter, said Friday that Gambrell isn't doing well.

"She's still on life support," Glatfelter said. "It's not good."

The occupants of the Malibu fled, and video surveillance from a nearby bar and from the York City School District administration building show a man matching Borders' description running from the scene, documents state.

No license: He didn't have a driver's license, police said.

Borders, 19, of 334 W. Princess St., remains in York County Prison on $100,000 bail in the case, charged with aggravated assault by vehicle, accidents involving death or personal injury, receiving stolen property, being a convicted felon in illegal possession of a firearm, simple assault, carrying a firearm without a license, hit and run, causing an injury accident while not properly licensed and summary traffic offenses including speeding and reckless driving.

His co-defendant, Shane Darell Brown, 20, of 19 N. Hartley St., is also in prison, charged with being a convicted felon in illegal possession of a firearm and carrying a firearm without a license. His bail was set at $15,000.

Second case: Borders also remains imprisoned on $500,000 bail for allegedly fleeing police two days after causing the crash that gravely injured Gambrell.

York City Police said officers spotted Borders on Front Street driving a rental SUV about 9 a.m. Sept. 18. They tried to arrest him, but Borders took off and led police on a chase that reached "dangerous" speeds, according to charging documents.

Borders crashed into another vehicle during the pursuit, but kept going, police said.

Borders abandoned the SUV on Heiges Avenue and ran on foot, but was captured in a breezeway to the rear of the 1100 block of West King Street, documents state.

Stolen SUV: The SUV was later determined to have been stolen, police said.

In that case, Borders is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, hit and run, reckless driving, driving without a license, running a red light and running a stop sign.

It is unclear whether Borders has retained an attorney.
