EVANS CITY, Pa. — A rural western Pennsylvania borough is celebrating its role in the cult zombie flick "Night of the Living Dead."

Officials in Evans City will place a historical marker commemorating the filming of the 1968 George Romero-directed gore-fest on Friday at the borough library.

The event kicks off the borough's HalloWeekends, which feature Halloween-themed events throughout October.

The movie, dismissed as far too gory by critics when it was released, is now considered a classic and has spawned several sequels and countless imitations.

Evans City is about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.
