Hanover Police: Man cut other man with box-cutter after argument over cell phone

Hanover Police say a man they found covered in blood Wednesday afternoon had used a box-cutter knife to slice a man who had argued with his girlfriend about cell phone usage.

John Lawrence Huyett, 29, of no fixed address, was charged Wednesday with a count each of aggravated assault, which is a felony, and simple assault with a deadly weapon, according to the criminal complaint filed against him.

Huyett and his girlfriend were in an apartment in the first block of West Walnut Street earlier that day with another couple, according to charging documents. The other man started calling Huyett's girlfriend "offensive names" after she wouldn't give him a cell phone, documents state.

The other couple eventually left, but then the other man came back, police say. Huyett told police he heard who he correctly presumed to be the other man running down the hallway toward the apartment, so Huyett took out a box-cutter knife "in case he needed to defend himself."

Huyett told police the other man started punching him in the face before throwing him down on a bed and choking him; that's when he sliced the man several times with the box-cutter, he said, according to documents. But the other man later told police Huyett shoved him against a wall and started cutting him up after the man just verbally confronted him, documents state.

The man had several "deep lacerations" from the knife, police say.

Huyett remains in York County Prison on $250,000 bail, according to authorities.
