York College golf team finishes second at invitational
CAPE CHARLES, Va. – The York College golf team came roaring back on day two of the Bay Creek Invitational on Tuesday to capture second place with a total team score of 627 on the Nicklaus Course at the Bay Creek Golf Resort.
The Spartans carded a 306 team score on day two, which tied Christopher Newport "B" for the lowest single-round team score of the tournament and picked up 15 strokes on their day one score of 321.
Christopher Newport "A" won the two-day tournament by an overall team score of 619 by carding team scores of 310 on day one and 309 on day two. Patrick Johnson of CNU "B" claimed the individual championship as he carded a four-over-par 148 (74, 74). Defending Capital Athletic Conference Champion Matt DiSalvo of CNU placed second with an overall score of a six-over-par 150.
The Spartans relied heavily on their seniors who both had stellar performances on day two.
Senior Ryan Wolbach finished tied for third overall as he carded a two-over-par 74 in his second round to finish with a nine-over-par 153. Wolbach carded birdies on the par-five third and ninth to finish one over on the front nine, and he made par on eight of last nine holes to finish one over on the back nine. Wolbach mad par or better on 15 of the 18 holes on his second round.
Senior Tyler Keim had a brilliant performance on day two to finish eighth with the fifth lowest score of the tournament with a twelve-over-par 156. Keim carded a one-over 73 on day two, which is the lowest single-round score of the two-day tournament. Keim finished one-over on the front nine as he made par on eight of the holes with a bogey on the par-four fourth. The senior carded an eagle on the par-five 11th after hitting a five iron from 212 yards out and sticking inside six feet from the cup. Keim scored a birdie on 18 as he made par or better on 14 of the 18 holes.
Freshman Tyler Newton finished tied for ninth as he carded the sixth lowest score with a 13-over-par 157 (79, 78) and finished as the second-lowest scoring freshman in the field. Newton started his second round making par on six straight holes and finished the front nine making par on seven of the first nine holes. Newton finished the round making par on 13 of the 18 holes.
Sophomore Brandon Hur finished the tournament tied for 15th with a total score of a 17-over-par 161, good for the eighth-lowest score in the field. Hur scored par on 10 of the 18 holes, including three-straight pars to finish his round.
Junior Alex Colton finished in 21st place as he picked up five strokes from day one with a day-two score of 81. Colton carded a birdie on the par-five fifth and again on the par-five 11th. Colton carded par or better 11 of the 18 holes.
Bay Creek Golf Resort will be the site of the Capital Athletic Conference Championship in the spring and again in 2017 and 2018. With the field of the Bay Creek Invitational consisting of all CAC teams, York would have placed Wolbach and Keim on the All-CAC squad with Wolbach earning first-team honors and Keim taking second-team honors.
The Spartans return to the course on Saturday for the two-day Mason Dixon Collegiate Invitational held at The Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown, Pa. The first round starts at approximately 10:30 a.m.
