Former Northern York band director accused of having sex with student
Northern York County School District's former band director is now accused of having sex with a student — charges his attorney said came without warning two years after a police investigation.
Jeremy Leidhecker, 28, of 105 Northway Road in Williamsport, is charged with institutional sexual assault and corruption of minors for allegedly having intercourse with a then-17-year-old girl at his Dillsburg apartment in 2013 while he served as director of bands at Northern High School, according to state police.
Rick Robinson, Leidhecker's defense attorney, said he and his client were "completely blindsided" by the charges stemming from the 2013 investigation.
"To our knowledge, no new evidence has been gathered," Robinson said.
According to the charging documents, the student was a member of Northern High's band and also served as Leidhecker's intern when school administrators learned rumors were spreading that the two had sexual contact on Sept. 28, 2013, at Leidhecker's former Glenview Circle apartment.
During the investigation, police interviewed Leidhecker's neighbor, who said he observed a pink Honda drive through the apartment complex parking lot that day and saw a girl — later identified as Leidhecker's student — make her way into Leidhecker's apartment, according to documents.
Noises heard: About fifteen minutes later, the neighbor's son told him "sexual noises" were coming from inside Leidhecker's master bedroom that could be heard from the parking lot, documents state.
The neighbor then walked toward Leidhecker's apartment, noticed the window was slightly open and heard the girl moaning loudly, according to charging documents.
Not long afterward, Leidhecker left his apartment and paced outside until the girl ran to his car, according to police. She laid down in the backseat as the two drove off, the neighbor reported.
The girl denied having sex or any electronic communication with Leidhecker when police interviewed her on Oct. 7, 2013, charging documents state. She admitted to going to Leidhecker's home on Sept. 28, 2013, but said it was because she agreed to take care of his cats.
Clipchat photos: A day after the girl's interview with investigators, police received a phone call from a woman claiming to be Leidhecker's ex-girlfriend, who said she had access to Leidhecker's account on "Clipchat," a Snapchat-like application that allows users to send and receive photos in a discreet manner as photos are destroyed after a few seconds into pixelated images.
The woman claimed she saw at least one pixelated image through Leidhecker's account that appeared to be of the student, according to documents. Days later, police obtained a search warrant for Leidhecker's Clipchat records and recovered several images suggesting he and the student were involved in a personal relationship, documents state.
When police interviewed Leidhecker about two weeks later, he denied having any contact with the student until Clipchat records were shown to him, at which point he admitted to having consensual sex with her in his apartment, documents allege.
Resigned: Leidhecker resigned from Northern High School two days later, according to school district spokeswoman Vangie Unti.
Robinson said his client's decision to resign stemmed from a desire to explore other professional opportunities.
Leidhecker posted a message on his music website that appears to reference his criminal charges. He wrote that the allegations came "without warning."
He remains free on $10,000 unsecured bail.
