network: Volunteers from York College will help out local organizations Saturday.
More than 300 students from York College on Saturday will spread out across York City and participate in a variety of service projects for the college's Spartan Service Day.
"They do a plethora of service activities," said Nick McConnell, residence life area coordinator and volunteer services coordinator at the college. "Students each year come together and they do these various volunteer projects, which range from cleaning up within the community, connecting with their city neighbors or doing some type of outreach."
The service day, now in its third year, pulls in more students annually, McConnell said. The college this year has partnered with about 15 agencies in the city that students will have the opportunity to work with.
Some of the service sites are: Access-York, Big Brothers Big Sisters of York County, Catholic Harvest Food Pantry, Children's Aid Society's Lehman Center, Downtown Inc, Garden Club of York, Healthy World Café, Hope Street Garden, Keep York Beautiful, Martin Library, Punks for Positivity, St. Rose of Lima Church, York City Parks & Recreation, York County's CASA Program and York County Heritage Trust.
"What we wanted to focus on was building a connection between York City and York College, and from there we decided to have a day of service to build that connection and to get our students out into the community," McConnell said. "Now they get to give back and get involved with the community that they call home for four years."
The service day also has helped students network within the city, McConnell said.
"These projects have also been a really great way to connect our students with certain resources in the community," he said. "There have been students who have even found internships."
Students interested in participating should meet in the parking lot across the street from Kinsley Engineering Center and near the rail trail to park. The group will walk along the rail trail downtown to kick off the event before breaking into smaller groups and spreading out to the various sites. Students will reconvene on campus at 4:30 p.m. for refreshments.
