The Spring Grove Area School District school board during their meeting on Monday approved the retirement of Superintendent Robert Lombardo and appointed the district's assistant superintendent as his replacement, effective July, 2016.

Lombardo has served as the district's superintendent since 2009 and has more than 38 years in education. After graduating from East Stroudsburg State college, Lombardo began his career as both a physical education and biology teacher in 1978. He later earned his principal's certificate from Lehigh university and then moved on to earn his Doctorate of Education from Seton Hall, according to a news release from the district.

Lombardo, who has a passion for sports, has also coached wrestling, football and softball during his years as a teacher.

"It has been richly rewarding to serve the students and families of Spring Grove over the past six-plus years," he said in the release. "This community cares deeply about the education of its children and the future they will inherit."

The district's current assistant superintendent, David J. Renaut was approved as Lombardo's replacement, after the superintendent's retirement at the end of June.

Renaut started with the district in 2001 as the principal at New Salem Elementary School. In 2007, he became the assistant superintendent and oversaw the K-12 instructional program, which included the staff curriculum, instruction assessment and professional development, according to the release.

Renaut completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Shippensburg University and received his doctorate from Immaculata University in May 2013. He has been in public education for 36 years.

"I am looking forward to the continuation and enhancement of the many successes that we experience in Spring Grove," he said in the release. "Along with a dedicated staff and supportive community, I will seek every opportunity to build a strong foundation for all children as they face a constantly changing world with a multitude of diverse expectations and challenges."
