Visitor center at York's Central Market goes high-tech
The Downtown York Visitor Information Center officially opened about a year ago, but Central Market hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the center and the addition of a large touch-screen "go board" that was recently installed.
"As long as the doors are open at market, this is available," said Brent Burkey, spokesman for the York County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
With the market being open for concerts and other events outside of regular Central Market and Visitor Information Center hours, visitors might drift through the area when there's no one manning the desk, Burkey said.
The "go board" will help them quickly browse through options for dining, lodging, factory tours, events and ways to travel. They can even check the weather.
People are comfortable with the digital interface, Burkey said. They might even choose to use the board, which offers much of the same information that can be found on the bureau's website, when the center is open.
The center's hours are 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Ribbon-cutting: After a few brief comments, Liz Winand, president of the bureau's board of directors, cut the ribbon with a giant pair of scissors.
County Commissioners Doug Hoke and Chris Reilly; Frank Dittenhafer, who designed the center; York City Mayor Kim Bracey; and Sonia Huntzinger, executive director of Downtown Inc, were in attendance.
The center is the result of the collective efforts of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, Central Market and the city, said Anne Druck, president of the CVB. Kristen Evans is the marketing and events coordinator with Downtown Inc, which helped to set up and publicize the ceremony.
"This is the center of York County," Evans said of Central Market. "It's such an iconic place, and it's important for people to see what's going on in the city and in the county."
