York County Rail Trail honored as among best of its kind

The York County Rail Trail is being recognized as one of the best of its kind in the nation.

The trail has been inducted into the Rails-to-Trails Rail-Trail Hall of Fame, according to a news release from the awarding organization.

The organization cites the Rail Trail and the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, the same route's extension down into northern Maryland, as key parts of what local trail enthusiasts hope to make into the Grand History Trail, a 250-plus-mile loop connecting York City, Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington, D.C., and Gettysburg.

A trail called the Midtown Greenway through southern Minneapolis also was inducted into the hall of fame; that trail and the local rail trail were the 28th and 29th trails so honored.

The organization chose the trails based on scenic value, historical significance, community connections and other criteria, according to the news release..
