Police: Homicide suspect arrested, shooting being investigated as 7th domestic-violence killing of 2015

Police say a York City man is accused of shooting a woman to death in the seventh domestic-violence-related homicide incident or attempt in York County this year.

Kameron Edward Orr, 24, of 542 W. King St., was arrested Wednesday and has charged with criminal homicide in the death of Ruby Mercado, 27, who was found dead early Saturday morning.

Mercado's family said the two, who do not live together, used to be romantically involved, and he is the father of one of her children.

York City Police and the U.S. Marshals caught Orr in Harrisburg, according to police.

Mercado, who had been living in the 600 block of West Market Street, was found dead in her Honda Odyssey at about 3 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of North Hartley Street, shot multiple times, according to police.

Officers canvassing the area found a witness nearby who said he had heard at least four shots fired sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight, and had seen a black man wearing dark clothing running north up North Hartley Street, charging documents state.

Police found a cell phone in the car that they determined to be Orr's, according to documents.

Other witnesses told police they had seen Orr, wearing a dark sweatshirt and black jeans, get into the van with Mercado at about 11:30 p.m., and then eventually turn north onto North Hartley Street with them both in the vehicle, documents state.

The York County Coroner's Office ruled Mercado's death a homicide after an autopsy Monday.

Lt. Troy Bankert, who supervises the department's detective bureau, said police are investigating this as a domestic-violence related homicide. Mercado's family said she was in the process of trying to obtain a protection from abuse owner against Orr.
