Woman injured in York City shooting

A woman was taken to York Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries after she was shot in the leg Tuesday evening in York City, according to police.

York City Police responding about 7 p.m. for reports of shots fired in the 400 block of Salem Avenue found a woman hit with one bullet in the lower leg.

Police do not believe the bullet was intended for her — she was merely sitting on the front porch while visiting someone.

Jaceita Chilton-Walker, who lives just a couple doors down from where the woman was shot, said she heard about five gunshots and ran down to check on her young daughter, who was outside on their porch.

"I was worried about her safety," she said.

She said she hears gunshots in the surrounding area fairly frequently, but no one had been shot on her block for several years.

"We're pretty insulated, usually," she said.

Police at the scene about half an hour after the shooting said they had no leads yet on who pulled the trigger.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should call York City Police at (717) 846-1234.
