Sprint car driver Campbell dies during practice lap at Williams Grove
MECHANICSBURG -- Sprint car driver James "Jim" Campbell Jr. died during a practice-lap crash at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night.
The accident took place in the third corner of the speedway during warm ups.
Campbell was from Feasterville, Bucks County.
The Cumberland County Coroner's Office said Campbell died after striking the wall on the half-mile banked clay oval.
A news release from the speedway read: "The staff and management of Williams Grove Speedway express and extend sincere sympathy to the Campbell family at this difficult time."
The rest of the Friday program and the Saturday Series racing program slated for Aug. 15 at Williams Grove were canceled "out of the utmost respect for the Campbell family as well as for all speedway employees, staff, management and emergency personnel as they all attempt to deal with the tragedy at hand," the news release said.
Campbell is the second driver to die in a racing crash in the region in August. All American Outlaws driver Carnie Fryfogle died in a wreck at Susquehanna Speedway Park in northern York County on Saturday, Aug. 1. Fryfogle was from Manchester, Maryland.
On Thursday night in Iowa, sprint car driver Kevin Swindell was airlifted to a hospital after his car flipped at the start of a heat race at the Knoxville Nationals. Swindell's car flipped, hit the outside wall and landed on its wheels at the World of Outlaws event.
