A former child advocate from Fairview Township who was convicted last year of indecent assault for inappropriately touching a toddler in a northern York County Walmart now faces 30 child pornography charges.

Robert Raymond Alfrey, 72, with a last known address in the 500 block of Fishing Creek Road, was arraigned Wednesday on 10 counts each of child pornography, disseminating photos or films of children involved in sex acts and criminal use of a communication device, according to court records.

He was remanded to York County Prison, where he remained as of Thursday, on $50,000 bail, according to a prison official.

This is the second time Alfrey, who was a volunteer child advocate in Cumberland County, was charged with child-related crimes.

Conviction: In October, Alfrey was convicted of indecent assault without consent, indecent assault of a child less than 13 years old and corruption of a minor for groping a 2-year-old girl who was in a shopping cart in the Newberry Township Walmart in July, 2013.

The child's mother looked away briefly a few times, providing time for Alfrey to fondle the girl at least twice, police said.

Another customer witnessed what was happening and alerted the child's mother, causing Alfrey to flee the store. But he was followed by the mother, who was able to give police office Alrey's license-plate number.

The incident was also caught on the store's surveillance system.

Alfrey avoided prison time when Common Pleas Judge Michael E. Bortner sentenced him to four years of probation. The judge also ordered Alfrey to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

At the time of Alfrey's sentencing, prosecutors decried the lack of prison time, saying the punishment was below the state's standard sentencing guideline range.

A few months prior to Alfrey's arrest, he was accepted as a volunteer child advocate with Cumberland County's Court Appointed Special Advocate, but he hadn't been assigned a case and had no contact with children through the program, its director previously told the York Dispatch.

An attorney who represented Alfrey in his previous case couldn't be reached for comment.

A preliminary hearing for Alfrey's latest charges will be held at district judge Scott Gross' office on Monday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m., according to court records.
