Mennonites descend on Harrisburg for world conference
HARRISBURG — The assembly of the Mennonite World Conference is being held in the United States for the first time since 1978.
WITF-FM reports 7,500 Mennonites from 80 countries are gathering at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg to worship, complete volunteer work and discuss important issues.
The conference, which takes place every six years and rotates among regions of the world, began Tuesday and wraps up on Sunday.
Janet Plenert, vice president of the Mennonite World Conference, says the Harrisburg-Lancaster area made the most sense to be the event's host site. The Farm Show Complex hosts the largest Mennonite Central Committee sale every year.
Plenert says Farm Show Complex officials told her the assembly is the greenest event they've held at the facility and they will borrow their strategies.
