The state Department of Health has logged its second round of applicants for medical marijuana permits, and there is significant interest in York County.

Five groups listed York County as their primary location for a proposed medical marijuana facility, as the department plans to award up to 13 grower/processor permits and 23 dispensary permits.

During the first round of applications, only one company was awarded a permit to open up shop in York County.

Florida-based Knox Medical opened its Penn Township dispensary in early June.

Another permittee, Firefly Dispensaries, now has plans to open a dispensary, RISE York, in West Manchester Township this summer after its originally planned location in Chambersburg fell through.

The department will be issuing permits based on an applicant's score — determined by a panel of judges — compared to others in its region.

York County is part of a 13-county region that includes Adams, Bedford, Blair, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Lebanon and Perry counties.

The department doesn't have an exact time frame set for issuing permits but plans on making the selections public before the end of 2018, according to a department spokesman.

Applicants: The five groups that applied for permits specifically in York County are Five-Leaf Remedies, Curio Cultivation and Processing PA, Ilera Dispensing LLC, Metro Pharm LLC and Pianta Industries LLC.

York City-based Five Leaf Remedies was the only one of those groups that applied for grower/processor and dispensary permits.

After failing to receive a permit during the first round, Five-Leaf partnered with Grow Op Farms, one of Washington state's largest marijuana producers, to bolster its application.

The benefit corporation is hoping to turn a warehouse at 213 E. Poplar St. in York City into a growing/processing plant and the former South York Diner in York Township into a dispensary.

Curio Cultivation and Processing PA is the other grower/processor applicant. Curio Wellness operates a dispensary in Timonium, Maryland, but no one from the company could be reached to confirm whether they are the same group.

Ilera Dispensing already owns and operates a dispensary in Montgomery County, and Pianta Industries applied during the first round to run a dispensary at 50 Northern Way in Springettsbury Township.

Neither could be reached to confirm where exactly their dispensaries would be located within the county.

Metro Pharm is listed at an address at 827 S. George St. in York City. No contact information was available.
