York Wallcoverings set to close its York City factory store
York Wallcoverings will be closing its York City factory store in the near future, according to an email sent to customers Thursday, Nov. 2.
The store, which is attached to its factory at 750 Linden Ave., will begin holding its closeout sale Monday, Nov. 6, and no official closure date has been announced, according to DeAnna Hain, the company's director of marketing.
Store hours will be Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for that first week, she said.
Hain said all of the store's products will be available at greatly reduced prices, and all sales will be final.
The decision to close the store — the company's only one — was difficult but necessary in order to adapt to the way consumers are shopping, Hain said.
Mindy Overocker, of Holden Beach, North Carolina, said she's traveled to York once or twice a year for the past six years specifically to visit the York Wallcoverings Factory Store.
Overocker said she was planning to make the trip some time after Christmas, but she's now trying to figure out if she can make the trip earlier, before the store closes.
To the best of her knowledge, Overocker said the store was the last wallpaper factory store in the nation, and she was holding out hope that the company would reconsider their decision.
"It really is an amazing place," she said.
The company will still operate its factories on Linden Avenue and Loucks Road in West Manchester Township, and their products will still be available worldwide, Hain said.
The closure will result in layoffs of retail personnel, which includes one designer as well as two full-time and two part-time sales associates, according to Hain.
Hain said the store's staff members, who have been working there for a long time, are "outrageously talented" and will be greatly missed.
York Wallcoverings, which was created in 1895, is the nation's oldest and largest wallpaper manufacturer. The store has been in business since 1990, according to the company website.
