FOOD INSPECTIONS: 3 out of compliance

David Weissman
  • New China Kitchen and Round the Clock Diner both out of compliance for second time since 2016.
  • Turkey Hill ruled out of compliance because employees not trained in food safety.

The state Department of Agriculture conducts annual inspections of food-serving businesses to ensure public safety and safe food-handling practices. Schools are inspected twice per year, according to the Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratories.

Whether an establishment is considered compliant or non-compliant is the discretion of the inspector. There are, however, several violations for which inspectors should automatically consider establishments non-compliant. Called "critical violations," they include food temperature issues, employee hygiene and issues with chemicals and how they're handled.

Depending on the severity of the situation, inspectors and their supervisors could file citations or close an establishment.

Below is a list of establishments that were inspected May 16-22.

Regular inspections:

New China Kitchen, 1500 N. George St., 10 violations

Action: Violations included food not being date marked; plastic bowls being used as dispensing utensils; wet wiping cloths not stored in sanitizer solution; bags of rice, flour and sugar stored directly on floor; raw shell eggs held at improper temperature; time used in lieu of temperature to control ready-to-eat foods; cutting blade observed with food residue; can opener observed with food residue; toilet not working properly and wouldn't flush; and tile cracked in employee restroom.

Note: This is the second time this restaurant has been ruled out of compliance since February 2016.

Turkey Hill, 1338 Mount Rose Ave., 1 violation

Action: Violations included employees not trained in food safety; employees not aware of 8 major allergens or big 6 illnesses.

Note: This facility has since been ruled in compliance in a follow-up inspection.

Round the Clock Diner, 145 Memory Lane, 15 violations

Action: Violations included food not being date marked; food stored past sell-by date; person in charge answered incorrectly to food safety questions; food employee wearing single-use gloves without prior hand wash; food employees changing tasks without proper hand wash in between; raw shell eggs stored above ready-to-eat margarine in cooler; in-use tongs stored on oven door handle; wet wiping cloths not stored in sanitizer solution; frozen bread rolls stored directly on floor; food stored directly under fluorescent light bulbs and maintenance supplies; temperature measuring devices not accurate; puddled clear liquid observed on bottom shelf inside bain marie; facility reusing cans to warm butter; doors open on waste handling unit outside; no towels available at hand wash sink in server station; and static dust observed on fan guards.
