York Dispatch

Giant Food Stores has announced a recall of certain Sargento shredded cheese products that are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall covers these products:

  • Sargento Shredded Nacho & Taco Cheese, 8 oz., UPC 4610040041 with code dates H14JUN17 and H12JUL17
  • Sargento Shredded Taco Cheese, 8 oz., UPC 4610040002 with code dates H14JUN17 and F28JUN17
  • Sargento Finely Shredded Cheddar Jack Cheese, 8 oz., UPC 4610040076 with a code date of F05JUL17

Giant has received no reports of illnesses connected to the products.

Listeria is a common organism found in nature. Eating food contaminated with the organism can cause listeriosis, a potentially fatal disease that can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea, as well as miscarriages and stillbirths. Healthy people rarely contract the disease, but it can cause serious infections in those with weakened immune systems, including infants, the elderly and those with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

Giant customers who bought the cheese should discard any unused portions and bring their receipt to the store for a refund. For more information, call Sargento at 800-243-3737 or Giant customer service at 888-814-4268.
