FOOD INSPECTIONS: 4 out of compliance
The state Department of Agriculture conducts annual inspections of food-serving businesses to ensure public safety and safe food-handling practices. Schools are inspected twice per year, according to the Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratories.
Whether an establishment is considered compliant or non-compliant is the discretion of the inspector. There are, however, several violations for which inspectors should automatically consider establishments non-compliant. Called "critical violations," they include food temperature issues, employee hygiene and issues with chemicals and how they're handled.
Depending on the severity of the situation, inspectors and their supervisors could file citations or close an establishment.
Below is a list of establishments that were inspected Jan. 31- Feb. 6.
OUT OF COMPLIANCE
Sunoco, 1947 W. Market St., 7 violations
Action: Violations included can of bug spray in cupboard observed under customer self service beverage counter; sanitizer stored in sink area above frozen beverage concentrates; milk pints displayed for sale past due date; packages of strong cheese in retail cooler observed moldy; beverage machine dispensing nozzles observed with food and mold-like residue; accumulation of mold-like substance on shelving in retail coolers; paper towel dispenser empty and hand wash sink in restroom; and floor in sink area has hole covered with cardboard.
Turkey Hill, 2 W. Main St., Dallastown, 11 violations
Action: Violations included no supervisor certified in food safety as required; original food certificate not posted in public view; customer self-service tongs exposed to possible contamination; chili and liquid cheese held at improper temperature; doughnut case is not properly labeled; torn rubber door gaskets observed on self-service refrigerator; accumulation of burnt char observed on roller grill; dried, hardened cheese splatter observed on chili/cheese hot dog holding unit; hand wash sink blocked; and paper towel dispenser empty at hand wash sink.
Royal Farms, 101 Carlisle St., Hanover, 9 violations
Action: Violations included salads, fruits and deli sandwiches observed with expired due dates; fruit stand with unwrapped apples has no sign indicating fruit should be washed before consumption; knives stored in water at improper temperature; ovens observed with encrusted grease and soil accumulation; hand wash sink blocked; mop bucket observed with old dirty standing water; entire facility extremely dirty and dusty; and ceiling and hood vents observed with large amounts of static dust and grease.
Vincenzo's Place, 2509 S. George St., 8 violations
Action: Violations included employees not aware of eight major allergens or big six illnesses; bagged onions stored directly on floor; refrigerated bain marie operating at improper temperature; time used in lieu of temperature to control ready-to-eat foods; unpackaged sub rolls stored in drawers lined with cardboard; cardboard used to line shelving; dried, crusted potato debris observed on cutting blades of french fry cutter; and hot water faucet broken at three basin sink.
