Red Lobster's Springettsbury Township location was closed Friday because it was dealing with an issue involving raw sewage, according to the state Department of Agriculture. 

The restaurant was allowed to reopen at 4 p.m. Friday, according to the company.

A "Closed by Order" sign was posted Friday morning outside the restaurant, 2555 E. Market St., by the department's Bureau of Food Safety and Lab Services. The notice, dated Thursday, noted that the closure was because of "Gross Facility and Equipment Sanitation" and "Waste Water/Sewage Disposal."

Department of Agriculture representative Will Nichols wrote in an email that an issue with raw sewage, a problem that had been plaguing the facility for 10 days, caused the closure. When representatives went to the store, they had to shut it down immediately because the sewage presented an imminent hazard to human health, Nichols wrote.

A manager at the restaurant directed questions to a company spokeswoman.

Erica Ettori, a Red Lobster spokeswoman, said the restaurant was temporarily closed because of a plumbing and maintenance issue that was being worked on overnight. She wrote in an email Friday that the restaurant  received clearance to reopen beginning at 4 p.m. Friday.

She said that it's important to note this was not a food safety issue.

According to the Department of Agriculture's food inspections website, the restaurant was last ruled out of compliance July 21, 2015, for nine violations, including a drain pipe from the ice machine to the floor being disconnected. Red Lobster passed its follow-up inspection a week later.
